The Talking Magpie (1946)

Mr. and Mrs. Magpie find a new place to live and prove to be very bad neighbours.

KS3 idea: In this cartoon, the music is used in three distinct ways: a) no music at all where it would mask the dialogue (or ocassionally to add suspense in a predictable 'wait-for-it' scenario) , b) general mood-setting while the story is developing, c) musical cliché to highlight particular situations and actions (e.g. "There's No Place Like Home" during a brief bird nest nursery scene, ascending patterns to sugest climbing up a ladder etc.) Working individually, in small groups or discussing as a class, students could decide which of these jobs the music is doing as the cartoon is paused 'at random' by the teacher.
